If you had a plain cheese pizza delivered to your home to save money or to please your guests but you really prefer some toppings, you can customize the pie in your own kitchen. Pizza delivery restaurants have plain cheese specials from time to time, which can be tempting when you're on a limited budget, but you don't have to go without the flavor that you desire.
There is a wide variety of ways that you can personalize the plain cheese pizza, and you probably have some or most of the ingredients in your pantry or refrigerator. If you often order cheese pizzas to save dough, consider stocking up on your favorite toppings so that you always have them on hand. Some food items are also cheaper when bought in bulk.
Following are some ways to transform your basic cheese pizza into a gourmet restaurant-worthy pie:
1. A Variety of Fresh Produce
The good thing about a plain cheese pizza is that it's a like a blank, edible canvas that you can enhance any way you'd like. If you have more fresh vegetables on hand than you'll be able to consume before they go bad, turn them into pizza toppings.
You can make a classic Margherita-style pizza by sauteing some sliced cherry or diced regular tomatoes in a little olive oil on your stove top. Spread them evenly on the melted mozzarella cheese and then top with a few fresh basil leaves. If you don't have the herb on hand, you can use a sprinkling of dried basil instead.
As another refrigerator-clearing option, saute bell peppers, onions, eggplant, broccoli and any other type of vegetable you'd like, and layer over the top of the cheese. If you prefer an extra-cheesy pie, place some mozzarella slices over the vegetables and bake until its melted.
2. Pineapple and Ham
If you love Hawaiian-style pizzas, you can make your own by topping the cheese with canned pineapple chunks and cubes of leftover ham. You can even cut deli ham slices into small pieces and place it on the pizza if that's all you have.
3. Buffalo Chicken and Blue Cheese
Another way to customize a basic pizza is by cutting fried chicken tenders into bite-size pieces, mixing it with your favorite BBQ and hot sauces, and placing it onto the melted cheese. If you're a vegetarian, you can use soy-based meat or even fried tempeh instead.
Add some blue cheese crumbles to the top and bake the pizza until the toppings are heated through. Sprinkle some chopped cilantro over the pie and serve.
